Brighter Tomorrows Women's Shelter Hosts Their 1st Annual Purple Paw Project

dog for purple paw articleThe first annual Purple Paw project served as a kick-off event to help Brighter Tomorrows raise awareness and community support highlighting the issue of women staying in abusive situations longer for fear of what will happen to their pets if they leave.

The ASPCA estimates that up to 48% of women stay in abusive situations longer because they fear for the safety and well-being of their pets.  Additionally, in 4 out of 5 cases of domestic violence, abusive partners had also been violent toward pets.  Unfortunately, because very few domestic violence shelters can accommodate pets, victims face the terrible decision of either leaving their pets in a dangerous environment, or giving up their furry loved ones.

The Purple Pet Project, scheduled during National Domestic Violence Awareness Month, offered a variety of pet-friendly activities along with domestic violence education and resources for the communities of Irving, Grand Prairie and beyond.  Events included dog grooming, a pet costume contest, a scavenger hunt, kids' barking contest, food trucks for humans AND pups and more!!!

Purple PawThe money raised through this event all went to help fund housing in shelters or foster situations for pets of women seeking shelter and afraid to leave their beloved pets behind for fear of what will happen to them.

Several groups including Service/Therapy Dogs and Irving K9 spoke about their roles serving the community and the invaluable roles their dogs play.  One of the Brighter Tomorrows staff told of a child that had been abused and wouldn't speak to anyone.  A therapy dog was brought in for the child to love and hold.  After a short time, the child asked if she could tell the dog what had happened.  She then whispered into the dog's ear what she had endured.

The unconditional love that our animals give and the pain and suffering they willingly help us through is something to be marveled at and forever appreciated.

Brighter Tomorrows is already planning next year's event.  If you are in the DFW Metroplex, set yourselves a reminder to watch for this wonderful event next October.  Don't miss out on an opportunity to help make a difference and enjoy a day with your best friend.
